today’s fave five comes to us from my previous boss (and friend), head baker at sofi (my favorite bakery in berlin; i’m not biased), elliana athanasis. ellie and i worked together for about a year and afterward collaborated on two pop-ups at the bakery. i learned so much from her and was incredibly happy to be a part of her fantastic team of bakers. we also swapped books on occasion and i think it’s safe to say we did, and probably still do, have similar “for you” pages across social media, as there were many a time when we would giggle or gawk at the various weird things that pop up there. so without further ago, enjoy ellie’s fave five and see you next week with a new recipe!
elliana athanasis’ fave five
Floating Points: For his latest tour, Floating Points has been accompanied by Akiko Nakayama, an artist who creates beautiful visuals alongside Sam’s live shows. Since seeing this really special performance last year, both his latest album and monthly NTS shows have been on heavy rotation.
National Theatre at Home: A platform that gives you access to stream British theatre at home. Although not quite as impactful as being there in person, it’s still a great substitute. Start with anything featuring Paapa Essiedu, his performances in both The Effect and Death of England: Delroy are incredible.
Say Nothing: This book is a really important account of the Troubles and the IRA. A painful but necessary look at some of the individuals involved in this recent history.
Cooking: I have been embracing January by mostly hibernating and cooking at home. Some recent favourites to find inspiration for the colder months are Joshua McFadden’s Six Seasons and Rachel Roddy’s An A-Z of Pasta.
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl: I watched the new Wallace and Gromit film over Christmas and it’s perfect for a cosy Sunday. It features the return of one of the best and surprisingly sinister villains, a penguin wearing a rubber glove to disguise himself as a chicken. Make sure to have plenty of tea on hand (only Yorkshire is acceptable!)
